Exhibition notes [PDF]
Jump Ship takes on the tradition of tattooing sailors to talk about a history of South Asians at sea.
As boat loads of
Tamil refugees attempt to enter Australia, the piece recounts the decolonizing role of lascars and the effect of Indian dissent on the European imagination. It marks tribute to the misfits, misanthropes and mutineers that flung fouling ropes into the course of colonial progress.
In collaboration with WT Norbert (Berlin–Sydney).
The performance took place on February 11, 2010 at Gaffa, Sydney.
